Use numbers from your proposal—not a salesperson's projection.

Enter spot and buyback prices for the same metal product, purity and troy-ounce equivalent. Blank fields are unknown, not zero. The example is hypothetical.

01 / THE METAL DEAL
$
Current metal spot for the quoted metal, not the dealer retail price.
oz t
Use fine-metal ounces, adjusting for purity and quantity.
$
Include all charges the dealer includes on the metal invoice. Exclude separately entered IRA fees.
$
Request a current, written, same-product buyback offer. Without it, the full break-even is unknown.

Include only charges not already in the metal invoice.
$
Do not double-count the per-ounce buyback spread.

Set genuinely waived charges to 0; leave undisclosed charges blank. A calculation based on incomplete fees is explicitly labeled partial. Variable or asset-percentage annual fees need separate modeling.

Five things the quotation should reveal

  1. Precise product name, fineness, weight and total metal purchase price.
  2. Spot benchmark, date/time and effective markup on that exact product.
  3. What the same dealer would pay to buy it back today.
  4. Custodian, vault and insurance charges—including waived fees and who pays them.
  5. Sale, liquidation, shipping, wire, storage and account-closure costs.

The CFTC and FINRA specifically flag dealer spreads and fees as risks in precious-metal IRAs. Read regulator guidance.

Next: compare disclosed custodial costs.

The custodian handles the IRA account. The dealer sells the metal. Different parties may charge you different fees, so custodian prices never substitute for dealer quotes.
